It could be an opportunity to make some extra cash, or score a few eco points - we recycle practically everything else in our lives, so why not our old kitchen.

Ways and Means

Always ensure when advertising the kitchen that you include specific dates of when it will be available for removal/collection.

If your units are of sound quality, undamaged and still 'on trend', style wise - Try to sell it on line via ebay. It helps to mention who the cabinets and doors were supplied by.

If the kitchen is serviceable but with little in the way of value, offer it free if collected on your favoured supermarket noticeboard, or take out an ad in your local paper.

If you are selling on line, take digital photos at flattering angles, so you can display it on your auction page.

Make a list of all the units and their individual measurements, and details of interior fittings. Number the cupboards and or/appliances and tally them with a plan of the old kitchen layout.

Do not throw away the worktops, even if they are damaged or worn - They can still be used as templates if the kitchen is re-installed in the same layout.

If the kitchen is still current and available from the manufacturer, give the details of the door name, colour and range to the person you sell to, as they may want to add additional units.

Provide as much information as you can to the buyer, as this will make the sale easier for both parties.

Flooring choices indepth Ceramic and porcelain tiles

Ceramic and porcelain tiles are hardwearing, lightweight, relatively easy to lay and are often cost effective for larger areas or for those on a tighter budget. They come in many different colours, textures and shapes - creating a large choice.

The tiles themselves are easy to maintain as they don't require sealing and are stain resistant. Making them naturally appealing to busy kitchens with young families and pets. No regular maintenence is required with this flooring type. Simply sweep and mop, making sure to avoid the use of abrasive or bleech based solutions, as this can affect grout.

Natural stone and slate

Stone and slate tiles are hardwearing and come in a variety of colours, textures and sizes. Some are porous, but sealants are available, and once applied the floor will be easy to maintain.
When the sealant is applied it can change the colour of the stone - So ask to see a sealed sample, before making your final choice.

For ultra modern and contemporary kitchens, choose larger size tiles with a smooth matt surface. In traditional kitchens, opt for textured finishes in smaller sizes. Maintenance: Reseal this product as recommend by the supplier. Vacuum and then mop with a mild, non-abrasive detergent. If a stain occurs, treat it with a specialist product which you can obtain from the manufacturer.

Laminate flooring

Laminate flooring is hardwearing and easy to look after. It is stain resistant and doesn't fade, but be aware that it can scratch. It comes in a variety of colours, grains and designs - including wood, stone and tile. When moving furniture or wearing heeled shoes, take care - as marks and scratches cannot be sanded out. Mop up spills promptly to avoid warping, and use a laminate floor cleaner regularly.

Vinyl

This product is exceptionally hard wearing, and an excellent choice for anyone who is working on a tight budget. It comes in a wide range of colours, designs and textures and can replicate the
look of: slate, wood, limestone and glass.

Vinyl is available in sheet and tile form, and being lightweight, its relatively easy to lay yourself - becoming even more cost effective. It is very easy to maintain, and suitable to use with under floor heating.

Be aware that thin vinyl can tear and dimple. So, use a good underlay and take care with sharp objects or when moving furniture. Its simple to clean too - sweep and mop through with a mild detergent.

written by Jenny Parfitt

Recently we met back up with a customer who sold a kitchen we installed over 23 years ago!

The all new 1050 x 1050 corner drawer units!!!

Just thought I'd let you all know that we have launched our new 1050 x 1050 corner drawer units, This gives you a very spacious 650mm wide (internal measurement) drawer as opposed to some other companies 400mm wide drawers. When you close either a door or drawer a 'Soft Close' mechanism closes the door/drawer quietly for you. You will never have to hear a door or drawer slam shut again!

What does 'High Line' & 'Drawer Line' mean?

High-line refers to a full hight door. Drawer-line refers to a door that has space for a drawer to go above it.

What is 'Cornice' & 'Light Pelmet'?

Cornice and light pelmet are the finishing arcatrave that goes above and below your wall units, respectively.

Hints and tips for ordering a kitchen

One of our expert fitters has thought of a few fool proof ways to help order the correct amount of components, and give advice on beginning the installation of your kitchen, if you are fitting it yourself.

Marking up

Marking up correctly is vital to installing your kitchen, we have developed a list of measurements to clarify at what height items should be fitted.

From the floor measure 860mm, this point will be the top of your base units.

From the top of the base units, measure to 900mm, this point will be the top of your work surfaces.

From the top of the work surfaces, measure to 1400mm, this point is the bottom of the wall units.

From the bottom of the wall units, measure to 2070mm, this is the point where the hanging brackets will sit for each wall unit.

From the hanging brackets: 2120mm is the measurement of the top of the wall units.

What a fillet pack includes

A fillet pack includes several lengths of carcasing that you will use as spaces and fillets when fitting your kitchen.

A pack includes: 2 x the following sizes; 20mm, 35mm, 50mm, 80mm & 100mm - all are 900mm in height.

We recommend purchasing one fillet pack per kitchen. If any other fillets are required, please do not hesitate in contacting us. Any other lengths you require can be purchased from the website, where a courier charge will be added.

How much to order?

Allowing for mitres on such components as cornice, light pelmet and plinths can be confusing, or forgotten altogether - luckily we have all the information you require to order the correct amounts, first time!

Cornice: When being worked out measure the run of each piece you will need above your wall units, then add an additional 400mm per return at the end of each run. Finally allow 100mm per mitre, as this allows for the mitre waste.

Light Pelmet: When working out the amount of light pelmet you will require, measure each full run underneath your wall units and add 400mm for each return. Finally add an additional 50mm per mitre, as this allows for mitre waste.

Work surfaces: Measure the entire lengths of the runs in your room, (for example an L-shape kitchen has 2 runs, therefore one mitre. A U-shape kitchen has three runs requiring 2 mitres. And a galley kitchen has no mitres at all.) Then add 100mm per mitre to your final calculation, this allows for the mitres and scribing of the work tops.

Plinths: With plinths, leave a gap of approximatly 10mm at the top to enable you to grip it, if it needs to be removed., Scribe them if necessary. If tall units (eg: oven towers, larder units or larder pull outs) are incorporated in your design, order an extra plinth to use as fillets.

Also, as a final tip: We recomend that you order 1 extra handle, in case of any eventualities.
